England beat Germany at Football (US AKA Soccer) last week . The last time was just 55 years ago in 1966 in the final of the World Cup. I remember it well. I was trapped at that precise time at a fancy wedding reception in a large tent outside a posh house near London. No smart devices of course. Our intense hunger for news was assuaged when one young man reported that he had found a TV in the house. About 50 men crowded into a study with a small black and white set. We were happy, not least because England were leading, until the bride’s father appeared and said, politely, but somewhat tersely “We are about to have the speeches if you would care to join us”. He was not at all amused when someone in the front row replied “Hold on, it’s half time in 10 minutes….”
We did not see the end, but have enjoyed the reruns and photos
At least that story was brief
All part of life’s rich tapestry
