Hospice and me…no, not me

We recently visited family in England and spent three nights in London. We stayed at William Harvey House, at the Royal College of Physicians. (You will recall that Harvey discovered/described the circulation of blood some years ago). Each suite is named after a famous Physician, like Cicely Saunders for the room next door to ours.          That name rang a bell in my dull memory. She was a faculty colleague (a Hematologist) at St Thomas’s hospital where I trained and worked a very long time ago. She founded the Hospice movement, which has spread worldwide, even as far as Charleston where I have been volunteering for a while.

For anyone further interested, I attach more about her from the booklet in the house.

Incidentally the name below hers (Hopkins) got the Nobel prise for discovering/inventing vitamins. He was a Biochemistry Professor at Cambridge, who taught my dad in the 20s. Thirty plus years later I also studied Biochemistry at Cambridge under a Nobel prize winner, Francis Crick (who much later became my patient).

All part of life’s rich tapestry.
